Real spray patterns are anything but uniform — they throw more water near the head and less at the edge — and the entire craft of irrigation design is a set of tricks for turning uneven spray into even coverage.
The Doughnut Problem
A single rotating or spray head does not water its circle evenly. It typically applies more water close to the head and progressively less toward the outer edge of its throw, where the stream breaks up and wind interferes. Plotted out, a lone head waters a doughnut, not a disc — strong in a ring, weak at the rim and sometimes at the very center. Rely on non-overlapping heads and you get a lawn of alternating soaked and parched patches.
Head-to-Head Coverage
The solution designers reach for is deliberate over-watering: space heads so that each throws water all the way to its neighbors, a practice called head-to-head coverage. Where two weak edges overlap, they sum to roughly the same rate as the strong zone near a head, and the field of overlapping doughnuts averages out to something close to uniform. This is why coverage math cannot simply divide lawn area by a head's circle — the overlap is the whole point.

Measuring Uniformity
Irrigation professionals do not guess at evenness; they measure it. A high figure means the driest spots receive nearly as much as the wettest; a low one means some grass is drowning so the dry corners get enough. Poor uniformity wastes water and still leaves brown patches.
Matched Precipitation and Wind
Two more rules protect uniformity. Heads on the same zone should have matched precipitation rates — a half-circle head must apply water at the same depth per hour as a full-circle head covering twice the area, or the half-circle zone floods. And because wind shreds the fine outer spray first, systems in exposed sites are run in calmer hours and spaced tighter. Uniform artificial rain is an achievement, not a default.
