Are You Actually Good? Skill, Luck, and Sample Size

A few wins in a row feel like proof of skill; a losing streak feels like proof of decline. Both feelings are usually illusions. In any game mixing skill and luck, telling real ability from random chance requires far more games than intuition suggests — and understanding this changes how you read your own win rate.

Every Game Has Luck

Almost no competitive game is pure skill. Card draws, spawn positions, matchmaking, and the play of teammates and opponents all inject randomness into every match. This means a single game's result — or even a handful — reflects a mix of how well you played and how the dice fell. Short-term results are noisy, and noise hides the signal of true skill.

The Tyranny of Small Samples

With few games, luck dominates the record. A genuinely average player can easily win seven of ten by chance, and a strong player can lose several in a row. Only over many games does luck average out and true skill emerge. A win rate from a small sample is barely evidence of anything — the fewer the games, the more the number is just noise.

Regression to the Mean

Streaks tempt us to extrapolate, but extreme runs tend to be followed by more ordinary results — regression to the mean. A hot streak rarely reflects a permanent leap in skill, and a cold one rarely a collapse; both usually drift back toward your true level. Reading a streak as a lasting change is a classic error that the mathematics of chance quietly corrects.

Reading Your Win Rate Honestly

A win rate becomes meaningful only across a large number of games, and even then it estimates skill rather than proving it exactly. Judging your play from a recent streak invites the twin errors of overconfidence and despair. The disciplined view treats a big sample as a signal and a small one as noise — patience being the price of an honest self-assessment.
