Why Elo Ratings Change More After an Upset

Elo rating systems are built on expected outcome — before a match, the rating difference between two players predicts a win probability, and the actual rating adjustment afterward is proportional to how much the result deviated from that expectation. A heavily favored player beating a huge underdog gains very little rating, since that outcome was already expected, while the same favored player losing to the underdog costs significantly more rating, because it was a much bigger surprise relative to the pre-match prediction. This is also why rating systems converge on accurate skill estimates over many games faster than they do from any single result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is MMR the same thing as Elo?
MMR (matchmaking rating) is often built on Elo or a similar system like Glicko, but specific games add their own adjustments for team composition, uncertainty, and placement matches, so MMR and pure Elo aren't always calculated identically.
