The Compositor's Art

Before software, imposition was a revered manual skill. A compositor arranged the type or plates on the press bed, the "forme," accounting not just for fitting pieces but for how the sheet would be folded and cut afterward so that everything landed in the correct place and orientation. It demanded spatial reasoning worked out in reverse, from the finished, folded product back to the flat sheet. A mistake was expensive and often invisible until the sheet came off the press.

Folding Into Signatures

Imposition reaches its full complexity in bookmaking. Book pages are not printed in reading order; they are imposed so that when the big sheet is folded into a "signature" and trimmed, the pages fall into correct sequence. This is why page one and the last page of a signature share a sheet, positioned so the fold brings them where they belong. Why the Grid Logic Endures
