Light, Radio, and X-Rays Are All the Same Thing

Light as an Electromagnetic Wave

The unification began with a theoretical triumph: it was shown that electric and magnetic fields, when they change, can sustain each other and travel through space as a wave, and that this wave moves at exactly the measured speed of light. The inescapable conclusion was that light itself is such an electromagnetic wave. Light was not a separate substance but a ripple in the same electric and magnetic fields that govern magnets and currents.

Waves Beyond Sight

If light is an electromagnetic wave of a certain wavelength, then waves of other wavelengths should also exist, invisible to us but otherwise the same. This bold prediction was confirmed when electromagnetic waves far longer than light, what we now call radio waves, were generated and detected in the laboratory, behaving exactly as the theory said. Suddenly the visible colors were revealed to be a tiny slice of a vast continuum stretching far beyond what the eye can see.

The Spectrum Is Continuous

From the longest radio waves to the shortest gamma rays, the electromagnetic spectrum is one unbroken continuum. The familiar categories, radio, microwave, infrared, visible, ultraviolet, X-ray, gamma, are human labels for regions of a single scale, not distinct kinds of thing. What makes an X-ray dangerous and a radio wave harmless is only their wavelength (and thus energy), not any difference in their fundamental nature. Why We See the Slice We See

Our eyes evolved to detect the narrow band of wavelengths where the Sun shines most brightly and the atmosphere is transparent, which is why "visible light" is visible to us at all.
