How Often Something Repeats

Frequency counts repetitions per second, whether that's a pendulum swinging, a guitar string vibrating, or an electromagnetic wave oscillating. It's the inverse of period — the faster something repeats, the shorter each cycle takes — and it's tied directly to wave speed and wavelength for any traveling wave. This calculator solves frequency both ways: from a known period, or from wave speed and wavelength.

The Formulas

From period: f = 1 / T
From wave speed and wavelength: f = v / λ

The first form is a pure reciprocal relationship: a 0.02-second period corresponds to a 50 Hz frequency, no matter what's oscillating. The second form applies specifically to traveling waves, where frequency, wavelength, and propagation speed are locked together.

Why Frequency Is the Number That Matters

  • Electrical power systems — grid frequency (50 Hz or 60 Hz depending on region) has to stay tightly regulated for connected equipment to run correctly.
  • Audio and acoustics — pitch is our perception of frequency; the audible range for humans runs roughly from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz.
  • Radio and wireless communication — every broadcast band, Wi-Fi channel, and cellular frequency is defined by an exact number of cycles per second.
  • Vibration and structural analysis — engineers check a structure's natural frequency to avoid resonance with expected loads, from wind to foot traffic.
