The Daily Shower Is a Surprisingly Modern Habit

When such societies declined, their bathing infrastructure often crumbled with them, and the habit of regular bathing receded for long stretches. Daily private bathing for everyone was simply not feasible without the technology to deliver clean water on demand.

What Made the Daily Shower Possible

The everyday shower depended on a chain of modern developments: indoor plumbing to pipe water directly into homes, reliable heating to warm it, and the shower itself as an efficient way to rinse the body with running water. Once clean, heated water flowed at the turn of a handle, the enormous labor of bathing vanished, and it became effortless to do daily. Combined with modern cultural expectations of cleanliness, the daily shower rapidly became a norm, in historical terms, almost overnight.
