The Ancient Art of the Stencil

At its heart, screen printing is a sophisticated stencil. The oldest ancestors of the technique appeared in East Asia, where artisans cut stencils and used fine mesh, historically silk, to hold the delicate parts of a design in place, a persistent problem with plain stencils, where isolated islands (the center of a letter "O") have nothing to attach to. Stretching the stencil across a silk mesh solved this: the mesh supported every part of the image while still letting ink pass through the open areas. The "silk" in the old name "silkscreen" is a direct fossil of this origin.

How the Ink Gets Through

The mechanism is unchanged across the centuries. A fine mesh is stretched on a frame, and the design is created by blocking the mesh everywhere ink should not go, leaving open only the image areas. Ink is placed on top and a squeegee drags across, pushing ink through the open mesh onto the material below. The calculator's usage rate reflects exactly this: the ink deposited is the ink forced through the open area of the screen, so more open image area, and a heavier press, means more ink consumed.

Industry, and Then Art

The technique spread west and became an industrial workhorse for printing on surfaces that flat presses could not handle, fabric, signs, bottles, circuit boards. Then, in the mid-twentieth century, artists seized it. The pop-art movement, and Andy Warhol above all, made screen printing a fine-art medium, exploiting its bold, flat color and its capacity for repetition to produce iconic images. The same squeegee-through-mesh process that decorated ancient textiles was now hanging in galleries, a rare technique equally at home in a factory and a studio.

Why Each Color Is Its Own Calculation

The stencil nature of screen printing explains the calculator's note that multi-color designs need a separate calculation per color. Each color requires its own screen, blocking everything except that color's areas, and its own pass of the squeegee. The colors are laid down one at a time, layer upon layer, exactly as a multi-stencil design always has been.
