Dating Age Range Calculator
The Internet's Favorite Age-Gap Rule
"Half your age plus seven" has circulated as a social shorthand for an "acceptable" minimum dating age for decades — and less commonly, its mirror version for a maximum. This calculator runs both sides of the rule against a single age input, so instead of doing the mental math on the fly, you get the full range in one step.
The Formula
Minimum Age = (Your Age ÷ 2) + 7
Maximum Age = (Your Age − 7) × 2
Maximum Age = (Your Age − 7) × 2
The Range at Different Ages
| Your age | Minimum | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| 18 | 16.0 | 22.0 |
| 20 | 17.0 | 26.0 |
| 25 | 19.5 | 36.0 |
| 30 | 22.0 | 46.0 |
| 40 | 27.0 | 66.0 |
| 50 | 32.0 | 86.0 |
| 60 | 37.0 | 106.0 |
The gap between minimum and maximum widens with age — at 18 the range spans 6 years, but by 50 it spans 54 — because the rule was designed as a rough social heuristic, not a linear scale.
Where This Rule Comes From, and Its Limits
- Origin — the formula predates the internet and has been repeated in etiquette columns and pop culture for generations as a quick mental shortcut.
- What it isn't — it is not a legal standard, a psychological guideline, or a statement about who is compatible with whom; it's a social rule of thumb applied to adults.
- Where people use it — most often informally, to gut-check whether an age difference in a new relationship falls within a commonly-cited "normal" range.
Note: This is a cultural guideline, not a scientific, legal, or universally endorsed standard. The calculator is intended for adult ages only.
