Matching by Element, Not Just Sign
Western astrology sorts all twelve zodiac signs into four elements — Fire, Earth, Air, and Water — and traditional astrological matching leans heavily on how those elements interact. This calculator determines each person's zodiac sign from their birthdate, maps it to its element, and scores the pairing using the elemental relationships astrology has used for centuries: like elements generally blend, Fire pairs well with Air, Earth pairs well with Water, and the remaining combinations run cooler.
The Formula
Element = Fire, Earth, Air, or Water, per sign
Score = fixed compatibility value for the Element 1 + Element 2 pairing
(same sign on both sides adds 5 points, capped at 100)

Fire and Air are considered complementary (both "active" or "extroverted" elements in astrological tradition), as are Earth and Water (both "passive" or "grounded"). Fire and Water, or Earth and Air, are treated as the most contrasting pairings.
