A standardized way to describe level of consciousness
The Glasgow Coma Scale combines three separately assessed components - eye opening, verbal response, and motor response - into a single score ranging from 3 (deep unconsciousness) to 15 (fully alert).
Worked example
For eye response 4, verbal response 5, and motor response 6 (a fully alert patient):
GCS = 4 + 5 + 6 = GCS 15 (Mild)
| GCS Range | General Severity Category |
|---|---|
| 13-15 | Mild |
| 9-12 | Moderate |
| 3-8 | Severe (consider airway protection) |
This tool requires the three component scores to already be assessed by a trained clinician using standardized criteria - it does not replace direct patient assessment, and results must always be interpreted by a qualified healthcare provider in full clinical context.
