Corrected Age Calculator
Two Ages for One Baby
A baby born at 28 weeks has spent twelve weeks fewer in the womb than a baby born at term. Six months after the birth date, the calendar says both infants are six months old — but one of them has had three fewer months of the development that would otherwise have happened before delivery. Corrected age closes that gap. It is the number that makes developmental milestones legible for premature infants, and without it, an entirely typical preterm baby can look worryingly delayed against charts built for term babies.
The Formula
The term in brackets is the prematurity adjustment: how many weeks of gestation were missed relative to a 40-week reference. That figure is fixed at birth and never changes. It is simply subtracted from chronological age from then on, which is why the gap between the two ages stays constant in absolute terms while shrinking steadily in proportional terms as the child grows.
The Prematurity Adjustment
Each adjustment below is just 40 minus the gestational age at birth:

This calculator applies only to births before 37 weeks. At 37 weeks and beyond, an infant is not classified as premature and the correction does not apply — the calculator will decline the calculation rather than return a token adjustment.
A Worked Example
Consider a baby born at 30 weeks who is 24 weeks old by the calendar. The adjustment is 40 − 30 = 10 weeks. Corrected age is therefore 24 − 10 = 14 weeks — roughly 3 months rather than nearly 6. Milestones such as social smiling or head control should be assessed against 14 weeks, not 24. That is a substantial difference in expectation, and it is the entire reason the calculation exists.
How the Gap Closes
For a baby born at 33 weeks, the 7-week adjustment stays constant — but it shrinks as a proportion of total age, which is why correction matters most in the first year.
Where Corrected Age Is Used
- Developmental milestones — rolling, sitting, babbling and walking are assessed against corrected age, not birth date.
- Growth charts — plotting weight, length and head circumference at corrected age avoids a false appearance of faltering growth.
- Feeding and sleep expectations — guidance framed in months usually implies developmental months.
- Parental reassurance — putting a number on the adjustment often relieves a great deal of unnecessary worry.
When Correcting Stops
Correction is conventionally applied until around two years of chronological age. By then, most preterm children have caught up, and the adjustment has become small relative to total age — a 12-week correction is half of a 24-week-old's life but only a ninth of a two-year-old's. The practice does not so much end as become irrelevant.
