Why MAP weights diastolic pressure more heavily
Mean Arterial Pressure represents the average arterial pressure across a full cardiac cycle - it is weighted toward diastolic pressure because the heart spends roughly twice as much time in diastole as in systole during a normal cardiac cycle.
Worked example
For a blood pressure of 120/80 mmHg:
MAP = 80 + (1/3) x (120 - 80) = 93.3 mmHg (Within typical target range)
| MAP | General Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Below 70 mmHg | May indicate inadequate organ perfusion |
| 70-100 mmHg | Typical target range |
A MAP of at least 60-65 mmHg is generally considered necessary to maintain adequate perfusion of vital organs, which is exactly why MAP is closely monitored in critical care and anesthesia settings. This is an informational tool only, not a substitute for clinical monitoring or judgment.
