Material Removal Rate (MRR) measures how quickly a machining operation removes material - a key metric for estimating cycle time and comparing efficiency between different cutting parameter combinations.

MRR = Depth of Cut x Width of Cut x Feed Rate

Example

0.1" depth of cut, 0.5" width of cut, 10 IPM feed rate:

MRR = 0.1 x 0.5 x 10 = 0.5 cubic inches/minute

Why More MRR Isn't Always Better

Increasing any one of depth, width, or feed rate increases MRR proportionally, but each parameter has practical limits - excessive depth or feed rate can cause tool deflection, poor surface finish, or premature tool failure, especially with less rigid setups or fragile tooling.

Balancing Speed Against Constraints

Real-world parameter selection is always a balance between maximizing MRR (for faster cycle times and lower cost per part) against these competing constraints of surface finish quality, tool life, machine rigidity, and workholding capability - the highest achievable MRR isn't automatically the right choice for every job.
