Weld Bead Volume Calculator
Weld Bead Volume Calculator
Planning filler metal needs for a welding job? This calculator estimates weld bead volume from basic bead dimensions.
Cross-Section Area = Bead Width x Bead Height x 0.6 (shape factor)
Weld Volume = Cross-Section Area x Weld Length
Example
A 300mm weld with 8mm bead width and 3mm bead height:
Cross-Section = 14.4 mm┬▓ → Volume = 4,320 mm┬│ (4.32 cm┬│)
Why the 0.6 Shape Factor
The 0.6 factor approximates a typical convex weld bead cross-section - neither a perfect rectangle (factor 1.0, if the bead were completely flat-topped) nor a perfect triangle (factor 0.5, if it came to a sharp point), but somewhere realistically in between, matching the gently rounded profile typical of most weld beads.
A Rough Estimate, Not a Precision Figure
This is a rough estimate useful for planning approximate filler metal consumption and cost, since actual bead shape varies meaningfully with welding process, technique, and joint configuration - for precise filler metal ordering on critical jobs, actual weld procedure specifications and manufacturer deposition rate data provide more accurate figures.
