Donation Matching Calculator
Matching Gifts Turn One Ask Into Two Gifts
A matching gift campaign works because it changes the pitch from "please give" to "your gift doubles" — and that difference measurably moves donor behavior. But the actual dollar impact depends on the match ratio and, often, a cap the matching donor or employer sets on total contributions. This calculator applies both so the real total, not just the headline ratio, is clear.
The Formula
Total Raised = Donation Amount + Matched Amount
When a match cap is set and the calculated match would exceed it, the matched amount is capped at that limit rather than scaling further — a common condition in corporate matching gift programs and challenge grants.
Where This Calculation Matters
- Corporate matching gift programs — many employers match employee donations 1:1 up to an annual per-employee cap, and donors want to know the real total before asking.
- Challenge grants — a foundation offering to match every dollar raised up to a fixed ceiling requires tracking exactly when that ceiling is reached.
- Giving Tuesday and year-end campaigns — a lead donor pledging a 2:1 or 3:1 match up to a set total is a common structure for driving urgency in year-end appeals.
- Donor communications — showing a donor the exact matched total ("your $100 becomes $300") is a proven motivator worth calculating precisely rather than rounding.
| Donation | Match ratio | Matched amount | Total raised |
|---|---|---|---|
| $50 | 1:1 | $50 | $100 |
| $100 | 2:1 | $200 | $300 |
| $250 | 1:1 | $250 | $500 |
Computed directly from the formula above (no match cap applied in these examples).
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the donation amount in dollars.
- Enter the match ratio (for example, 1 for a 1:1 match, 2 for a 2:1 match).
- Optionally enter a match cap in dollars if the matching program has a limit.
- Select Calculate to get the matched amount and the combined total raised.
