Why "Overaward" Rules Exist
Federal regulations prohibit total financial aid - scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study combined - from exceeding a student's Cost of Attendance. If combined aid exceeds COA, schools are generally required to reduce aid, an "overaward," often by cutting need-based aid or loan amounts first.
Report Outside Scholarships to Your Financial Aid Office
Students are generally required to report any outside scholarships won to their school's financial aid office - failing to do so and later discovering an overaward can create an unexpected, sudden reduction in previously awarded aid, so proactive reporting is the better approach.
