Sleep Efficiency Calculator

Time in Bed Isn't the Same as Time Asleep

Two people can each spend eight hours in bed and get very different quality of rest — one falls asleep quickly and stays asleep, the other tosses, checks the clock, and lies awake for stretches. Sleep efficiency captures that difference as a single percentage: how much of the time spent in bed was actually spent asleep. It's one of the core metrics used in clinical sleep assessments and by most consumer sleep trackers.

The Formula

Sleep Efficiency = (Time Asleep ÷ Time in Bed) × 100

Both inputs are measured in minutes. A ratio of 1.0 (100%) would mean every minute in bed was spent asleep, which essentially never happens due to the time it takes to fall asleep and any overnight awakenings.

Where This Matters

  • Cross-checking a wearable's sleep score — sleep trackers report an efficiency percentage using this same ratio; verifying the underlying minutes catches tracking errors.
  • Identifying fragmented sleep — a low efficiency despite a long time in bed points toward frequent waking rather than insufficient opportunity to sleep.
  • Sleep hygiene changes — tracking efficiency before and after a change (earlier bedtime, less screen time, cooler room) shows whether it actually improved sleep quality, not just duration.

Efficiency Rating Guide

General sleep efficiency benchmarks
EfficiencyRating
85% and aboveGood — considered normal/healthy
75% – 84%Fair — below the typical healthy threshold
Below 75%Poor — well below the typical healthy threshold

Sleep clinics commonly use 85% as a general benchmark for healthy sleep efficiency; this is a widely cited reference point, not a diagnostic cutoff.

Note: This is an informational estimate, not a clinical assessment. Persistent low efficiency is worth discussing with a healthcare provider.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the time you were actually asleep, in minutes, in the Time Actually Asleep field.
  2. Enter the total time spent in bed, in minutes, in the Total Time in Bed field.
  3. Select Calculate to see the efficiency percentage and its rating.
