Packing List Weight Calculator

Adding Up a Suitcase Before the Scale Does It For You

Checked-bag weight fees are one of the few travel costs that are entirely avoidable with five minutes of arithmetic at home. Rather than guessing whether a stack of clothes, shoes, and a toiletry bag clears the airline's limit, this calculator sums the individual item weights you enter and compares the total directly against your limit.

The Formula

Total Weight = Sum of Item Weights Difference = Total Weight − Weight Limit

A positive difference means the bag is over the limit by that amount; a negative (or zero) difference means there's that much allowance left to spare.

Typical Airline Weight Limits

Limits vary by airline, cabin class, and route, but these figures are widely published and commonly used as planning benchmarks:

Commonly published checked and carry-on weight limits
Bag typeTypical limit
Checked bag, economy (many international carriers)23 kg (50 lb)
Checked bag, premium/business cabin (many carriers)32 kg (70 lb)
Carry-on bag (many carriers)7–10 kg (15–22 lb)

These are general industry-common figures, not a specific airline's policy — always confirm the limit for your actual carrier and fare class before packing.

Worked Example

Five packed items weighing 4.2, 3.5, 2.8, 6.1, and 1.9 kg sum to 18.5 kg total:

Example result against two common limits
Weight limitResult
23 kgWithin limit (4.5 kg to spare)
15.5 kgOver limit by 3 kg

Where This Calculation Matters

  • Avoiding overweight fees — catching an overweight bag at home instead of at the check-in counter.
  • Multi-bag trips — rebalancing items between two suitcases so neither one goes over.
  • Carry-on-only travel — verifying a packing list stays under a strict carry-on weight cap for budget carriers.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter Item Weights as a comma-separated list (for example: 2.5, 3, 1.2).
  2. Enter the Weight Limit for your bag, in the same unit as your item weights.
  3. Select Calculate to see the total weight and how it compares to the limit.
