How Long Is the Flight, Really?

Airlines publish scheduled block times that already bake in taxi, holding patterns, and prevailing winds, but if you're sketching an itinerary, comparing routing options, or just curious how a private or general aviation leg stacks up, the raw physics is straightforward: time in the air is distance divided by speed. The tricky part is picking a realistic cruise speed, since a regional turboprop, a long-haul widebody, and a Cessna 172 cover the same route at wildly different rates.

The Formula

Flight Time (hours) = Distance ÷ Speed

The result is converted from decimal hours into hours and minutes for readability, with the seconds fraction rounded to the nearest minute.

Typical Cruise Speeds by Aircraft Type

Because the calculator asks for a speed directly, it helps to know roughly what to enter. These are commonly cited cruise speed ranges, not guarantees for any specific flight:

These figures are pure distance ÷ speed and exclude taxi time, climb/descent, holding, and headwind or tailwind effects — actual scheduled block time from an airline is usually somewhat longer.
