Travel Time Zone Calculator

Two Different Questions, Both About Time Zones

Crossing time zones raises two separate questions: what time is it right now at your destination, and how many days will it realistically take your body to adjust once you're there? This calculator answers both, switching between a straight clock conversion and a jet lag recovery estimate depending on which one you need.

The Formulas

Clock conversion: Destination Time = Current Time + (Destination UTC Offset − Origin UTC Offset) Jet lag estimate: Timezones Crossed = |Destination Offset − Origin Offset| Recovery Days = Timezones Crossed × (1.0 if eastward, 0.67 if westward)

The jet lag formula reflects a widely cited travel-medicine rule of thumb: adjusting to eastward travel (losing time, e.g. flying from the US to Europe) is generally harder on the body's circadian rhythm than adjusting to westward travel (gaining time) of the same number of zones, so eastward crossings are weighted more heavily.

Worked Examples

Jet lag recovery estimate by timezones crossed
Timezones crossedDirectionEstimated recovery
3Eastward3.0 days
3Westward2.0 days
8Eastward8.0 days
8Westward5.4 days

This is a rule-of-thumb approximation, not a clinical estimate — individual recovery varies with sleep habits, age, and how much light exposure is managed on arrival.

Where This Calculation Matters

  • Scheduling calls across regions — converting a meeting time to what it will actually be on your calendar mid-trip.
  • Booking arrival-day plans — knowing the true local time helps decide whether to schedule anything the day you land.
  • Planning around big events — building in extra buffer days after a long eastward flight before an important meeting or performance.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Choose a mode: Convert Time Between Zones or Estimate Jet Lag Recovery.
  2. For time conversion, enter the Current Time (HH:MM, 24h), the Origin UTC Offset, and the Destination UTC Offset.
  3. For jet lag, enter just the Origin UTC Offset and Destination UTC Offset.
  4. Select Calculate to see the converted local time (with a next-day/previous-day note if applicable) or the estimated recovery period.
