Why torque units vary by industry
Torque wrench specifications, engine bolt torque values, and tool ratings are expressed in different units depending on region and industry - newton-meters dominate internationally and in scientific contexts, while US automotive and tool specs commonly use foot-pounds or inch-pounds.
Worked example
For 100 foot-pounds:
Result = 135.58179 N.m = 100.0 ft-lb = 1200.0 in-lb

Getting torque units right matters more than it might seem - using an inch-pound spec as if it were foot-pounds (or vice versa) produces a 12x error, which can lead to dangerously under-torqued or over-torqued fasteners.
