Pet Calorie Calculator
Why "How Much Should I Feed My Pet" Has a Real Formula
Feeding guidelines printed on a bag of pet food are calibrated to an average animal, but calorie needs actually scale with metabolic body size and shift substantially with life stage — a spayed adult, a growing kitten, and a working dog need very different amounts of energy at the same body weight. This calculator uses the standard veterinary nutrition formula to estimate daily calorie needs from weight and life stage.
The Formula
RER estimates the energy needed simply to maintain basic body functions at rest. DER scales that baseline up (or down) by a factor reflecting activity level, reproductive status, and growth stage.
Life-Stage Factors
| Life stage | Factor |
|---|---|
| Weight loss goal | 1.0 |
| Senior | 1.4 |
| Weight gain goal | 1.5 |
| Adult, spayed/neutered | 1.6 |
| Adult, intact | 1.8 |
| Puppy/kitten, over 4 months | 2.0 |
| Puppy/kitten, under 4 months | 3.0 |
| Active/working dog | 4.0 |
Worked Examples
| Weight | Life stage | RER | DER |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 kg | Adult, spayed/neutered | 662.0 kcal/day | 1,059.2 kcal/day |
| 20 kg | Active/working dog | 662.0 kcal/day | 2,648.1 kcal/day |
| 5 kg | Adult, spayed/neutered | 234.1 kcal/day | 374.5 kcal/day |
RER is identical for the same weight regardless of life stage; only the DER multiplier changes, which is why an active working dog needs roughly four times the resting baseline while a weight-loss plan targets the resting baseline itself.
Where This Calculation Matters
- Weight management plans — setting a calorie target below current maintenance intake for a controlled weight loss program.
- Switching foods — converting a DER estimate in kcal/day into a daily amount of a specific food using its labeled kcal-per-cup or kcal-per-can figure.
- Life-stage transitions — recalculating needs as a puppy or kitten grows past 4 months, or as an adult pet enters its senior years.
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the animal's Weight and choose the unit (kg or lb).
- Select the Life Stage that best matches the animal's status.
- Select Calculate to see the estimated daily energy requirement in kcal/day.
