Two Different Fluid Rate Questions, One Calculator

IV fluid rate calculations come up in two distinct situations: converting a prescribed total volume and infusion time into a pump rate (and drip rate, if using a gravity set), or working out a maintenance rate from an animal's body weight when no total volume has been specified yet. This calculator handles both, switching modes depending on which inputs are available.

The Formulas

From volume and time: Rate (mL/hr) = Total Volume (mL) ÷ Time (hr) Drip Rate (drops/min) = (Volume × Drop Factor) ÷ (Time in minutes) From body weight (maintenance): Daily Volume (mL) = Weight (kg) × Maintenance Rate (mL/kg/day) Rate (mL/hr) = Daily Volume ÷ 24

A commonly cited canine/feline maintenance range runs roughly 2–6 mL/kg/hr (about 48–144 mL/kg/day) depending on age and condition; this calculator defaults to 60 mL/kg/day as a general starting figure, but that default should be adjusted or overridden per the treating veterinarian's protocol.

Where This Calculation Matters

  • Setting an infusion pump — converting a prescribed total volume and duration into the mL/hr rate a pump requires.
  • Gravity-fed drip sets — when no pump is available, drops per minute is the practical rate to count and adjust by hand.
  • Maintenance fluid planning — estimating an ongoing hourly rate for a hospitalized patient based on body weight alone.
