Ad Budget Pacing Calculator

Catching a Budget Problem Before the Campaign Ends

A campaign that's overspending or underspending relative to plan is only obvious in hindsight once the budget runs out early or money is left unspent at the end — unless you check pacing partway through. This calculator compares actual spend to date against what should have been spent by this point in the flight, and projects where total spend will land if the current rate continues.

The Formula

Ideal Spend to Date = Total Budget × (Days Elapsed / Total Days)
Pacing% = (Actual Spend / Ideal Spend) × 100
Projected Total Spend = (Actual Spend / Days Elapsed) × Total Days

A pacing figure above roughly 105% indicates overpacing (spending faster than planned), below roughly 95% indicates underpacing, and figures in between are considered on pace.

Where This Calculation Matters

  • Mid-flight budget checks — catching an overpacing campaign at day 10 of 30 leaves time to adjust bids or budget caps before funds run out early.
  • Avoiding underspend — a campaign pacing well under budget may be leaving performance on the table due to overly conservative bids or narrow targeting.
  • End-of-month forecasting — the projected total spend figure flags whether a campaign will finish over or under its allocated budget.
  • Client and stakeholder reporting — pacing status is a standard line item in campaign status reports for anyone managing a media budget.

Worked Example

A $15,000 campaign running 30 days should have spent $5,000 by day 10 (ideal spend). Actual spend of $6,000 at that point puts pacing at 120% — overpacing — and projects a total spend of $18,000 if the rate holds, $3,000 over budget. The same campaign at $3,500 actual spend by day 10 paces at 70% — underpacing — projecting a total of $10,500, well under the $15,000 allocation.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the total campaign budget in dollars.
  2. Enter the total campaign length in days.
  3. Enter the number of days elapsed so far.
  4. Enter the actual spend to date.
  5. Select Calculate to get ideal spend, pacing percentage, projected total spend, and pacing status.
