Animal Units standardize grazing pressure across different livestock types and sizes - one Animal Unit represents a 1,000 lb beef cow with calf, letting ranchers compare stocking pressure from cattle, horses, sheep, or mixed herds on the same scale.
Worked example
For 50 animals averaging 1,200 lb each on 100 acres of pasture:
Animal Units = (1200/1000) x 50 = 60.0 AU
Stocking Rate = 60 / 100 = 0.6 animal units per acre (60.0 total AU)
Stocking rates that exceed a pasture's actual carrying capacity lead to overgrazing, which degrades forage quality and long-term pasture productivity - matching stocking rate to realistic carrying capacity (which varies by region, rainfall, and forage type) is a core rangeland management principle.
