Silage Dry Matter Calculator

Getting moisture right before ensiling

Dry matter percentage is one of the most important quality checks before chopping and packing forage into silage - fermentation quality depends heavily on hitting the right moisture window.

Worked example

For a 10kg wet sample that dries down to 3.5kg:

DM% = 3.5 / 10 x 100 = 35.0% dry matter (Within the ideal range for most silage fermentation)

Dry Matter %Fermentation Risk
Below 30%Too wet - seepage and poor fermentation risk
30-40%Ideal range for most silage
Above 40%Too dry - poor packing and mold risk
