Pesticide Dosage Calculator
Product Labels Give a Rate, Not a Final Quantity
Pesticide product labels specify an application rate — per unit of field area, or per volume of tank water — and it's left to the applicator to scale that rate to their actual field size or tank. Getting this conversion wrong in either direction has real consequences: under-dosing risks poor pest control and can accelerate resistance development, while over-dosing wastes product and can violate label requirements or leave excess residue.
The Formulas
Rate per Area: Pesticide Needed = Recommended Rate (per unit area) × Area
Tank Mix (per 100L): Pesticide per Tank = (Rate per 100L × Tank Volume) ÷ 100
Tank Mix (per 100L): Pesticide per Tank = (Rate per 100L × Tank Volume) ÷ 100
Where This Calculation Matters
- Field-scale application planning — scaling a per-hectare or per-acre label rate to an actual field size before purchasing or mixing product.
- Sprayer tank mixing — many labels specify product per 100 liters of carrier water, which needs converting to the actual tank size on a specific sprayer.
- Label compliance — agricultural pesticide labels are legal application documents in most jurisdictions; the exact rate calculated here is what compliance is measured against.
- Avoiding resistance development — consistently under-applying pesticide relative to label rate is a recognized driver of pest resistance over time.
Worked Examples
| Mode | Inputs | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Rate per area | 2.5 units/ha × 8 ha | 20.0 units of pesticide |
| Tank mix (per 100L) | 200 ml per 100L × 500L tank | 1,000.0 ml (1.0 L) per tank |
Always use the units specified on the actual product label — "units" here stands in for whatever measure (mL, g, oz) the specific product's label uses.
How to Use This Calculator
- Choose Rate per Area or Tank Mix (per 100L).
- For Rate per Area, enter the recommended rate per unit area and the total area.
- For Tank Mix, enter the recommended rate per 100 liters and the actual tank volume in liters.
- Select Calculate to get the total pesticide quantity needed.
