Isolating fertilizer's real contribution to yield
Comparing fertilized yield against an unfertilized check plot isolates exactly how much additional yield the nitrogen fertilizer itself produced, separate from yield the soil would have produced on its own.
Worked example
For a yield of 8,000 kg/ha with nitrogen versus 5,000 kg/ha without, using 150 kg/ha of nitrogen:
NUE = (8000 - 5000) / 150 = 20.0 kg yield increase per kg N applied
Higher NUE benefits both the farm's bottom line (less fertilizer wasted for the same yield gain) and the environment (less excess nitrogen available for runoff and leaching into waterways) - it is a key metric agronomists track when optimizing fertilizer programs.
