Comparing stars on equal footing
Apparent magnitude depends heavily on distance - a dim nearby star can look brighter than a genuinely luminous but distant one. Absolute magnitude removes distance from the equation entirely by asking how bright an object would appear from a standardized 10 parsecs away.
Worked example
For the Sun, with an apparent magnitude of -26.74 at a distance of 0.0000048 parsecs (1 AU):
M = -26.74 - 5 x log10(0.0000048 / 10) = 4.854
This result closely matches the Sun's real, well-documented absolute magnitude of about 4.83 - a useful validation that the Sun, despite appearing overwhelmingly bright in our sky, would look like a fairly ordinary, modestly bright star if viewed from 10 parsecs (about 32.6 light-years) away.
