A Light-Year Measures Distance, Not Time
Despite the name, a light-year has nothing to do with the length of a year — it's the distance light travels through the vacuum of space in one Julian year, moving at exactly 299,792,458 meters per second. Because that speed is fixed by definition, a light-year converts to a precise number of kilometers, and from there to any other distance unit. This calculator handles those conversions directly, including the astronomer's own units: astronomical units (AU) and parsecs.

1 light-year = Speed of Light × Seconds per Julian Year
1 light-year = 299,792,458 m/s × 31,557,600 s
Every unit in the calculator is first converted to meters, then converted out to the target unit — the same approach used for any dimensional conversion, just applied at astronomical scale.
