Magnification Is a Ratio, Not a Telescope Spec
A telescope doesn't have one fixed magnification — it has a focal length, and magnification changes depending on which eyepiece is inserted. That's a common source of confusion for new telescope owners who expect a single "power" number printed on the box. In reality, every eyepiece swap changes the magnification, and the same telescope can run anywhere from wide, low-power views of star fields to tight, high-power views of planetary detail just by changing eyepieces.
The Formula
Both focal lengths are measured in millimeters and are typically printed on the telescope's specification sheet and on the eyepiece barrel itself. A shorter eyepiece focal length always produces higher magnification.
Why This Ratio Matters
- Choosing an eyepiece set — building a useful eyepiece collection means picking focal lengths that give a spread of magnifications suited to different targets, not just buying whatever's cheapest.
- Matching magnification to the target — wide star clusters and nebulae need low magnification and a wide field of view, while the Moon, planets, and double stars reward much higher magnification.
- Respecting the telescope's limits — every telescope has a practical maximum useful magnification (commonly estimated at about 50× per inch of aperture); pushing an eyepiece past that just produces a dimmer, blurrier image, not more detail.

Focal lengths above (650mm and 1000mm short refractors/reflectors, 2032mm a common 8-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain focal length) and standard eyepiece focal lengths (25mm, 10mm, 6mm) are typical commercial values; magnification figures are computed directly from them.
