Why cells can't just keep growing bigger

As a cell grows larger, its volume increases with the cube of radius while its surface area only increases with the square - this mismatched scaling is the fundamental physical reason cells stay microscopically small rather than growing indefinitely.

Worked example

For a roughly spherical cell with a 10 micrometer radius:

Surface Area = 4π x 10² = 1256.637 μm²

Volume = (4/3)π x 10³ = 4188.79 μm³

Ratio = 0.3 per um

A cell that grew too large would have too little membrane surface area relative to its internal volume to adequately exchange nutrients, gases, and waste with its environment - this constraint is exactly why large organisms are built from many small cells working together, rather than fewer, larger ones.
