A Snapshot of Cells Under the Microscope Reveals a Timing Secret
At any given moment, only a fraction of cells in a growing tissue are actually in the visible stages of mitosis — most are in interphase, quietly preparing. Counting what fraction of cells in a fixed sample are caught mid-division, the mitotic index, turns a single microscope snapshot into an estimate of how much of the total cell cycle is actually spent dividing.
The Formula
Duration of Mitosis = (MI ÷ 100) × Total Cycle Time
The mitotic index is simply the percentage of counted cells visibly undergoing division at the moment of observation. Multiplying that percentage by the total length of the cell cycle estimates how much real time the mitosis phase actually occupies.
Where This Calculation Matters
- Cancer diagnostics — an elevated mitotic index in a tissue biopsy is a standard indicator of tumor grade and proliferation rate.

A mitotic index around 3-5% is typical for many healthy proliferating tissues; substantially higher values are one of several features pathologists look for when grading tumor aggressiveness.
