Solution Osmolarity Calculator
Why molarity alone doesn't predict osmotic effects
Osmolarity counts total dissolved particles per liter, not just molecules of the original solute - a compound that dissociates into multiple ions in solution contributes multiple osmotically active particles per formula unit.
Worked example
For a 1M solution of a salt that dissociates into 2 particles (like NaCl into Na+ and Cl-):
Osmolarity = 1 x 2 = 2.0 Osm/L
This is exactly why a 1M NaCl solution has double the osmotic effect of a 1M glucose solution (which doesn't dissociate, contributing just 1 particle per molecule) - osmotic pressure and effects on cells depend on total particle count, not the identity or molarity of the original solute alone.
