Converting an abstract growth constant into an intuitive number

A growth rate constant (k) from the exponential growth equation N(t) = N0 x e^(kt) is mathematically useful but not intuitive on its own - doubling time converts it into a much more relatable figure: how long until the population exactly doubles.

Worked example

For a growth rate constant of 2.08 per hour:

Doubling Time = ln(2) / 2.08 = 0.333 hours (20.0 minutes)

This result lands almost exactly on 20 minutes - the well-known doubling time of E. coli bacteria growing under ideal laboratory conditions, one of the fastest-doubling organisms commonly studied, confirming this figure aligns with real published microbiology reference values.
