Life Reduced to Its Underlying Math
From how fast bacteria multiply to how quickly a protein's molecular weight can be estimated, biology runs on quantifiable processes with well-established formulas. These ten calculators cover cellular, molecular, and population-level biology math.
How Fast Bacteria Actually Multiply
| Elapsed Time | Population (starting from 1 cell) |
|---|---|
| Start | 1 |
| 1 hour (3 doublings) | 8 |
| 2 hours | 64 |
| 4 hours | 4,096 |
| 8 hours | Over 16 million |
This is exponential growth in its purest form: the population does not add a fixed amount each period, it multiplies by the same factor each period — which is exactly why exponential curves look deceptively flat at first and then rise almost vertically. Real populations eventually run into limiting factors like food, space, and waste buildup that unlimited lab conditions do not have, which is why real-world growth curves flatten into an S-shape rather than continuing forever. Try different doubling times in the Population Growth Calculator.
