Why running count alone is misleading

The same running count means very different things depending on how many decks remain in the shoe - dividing by decks remaining normalizes it into "true count," the figure card counters actually use to adjust bet sizing and playing decisions.

Worked example

For a running count of +8 with 4 decks remaining:

True Count = 8 / 4 = 2.0

A running count of +8 with 1 deck remaining (true count of 8) represents a dramatically stronger player advantage than the same +8 running count with 6 decks remaining (true count of 1.33) - this is exactly why the conversion to true count matters so much in real multi-deck blackjack play.
