Spades Bid Calculator

Bidding too high in Spades leaves you short of your contract and eating a penalty; bidding too low leaves tricks on the table that count for nothing extra. Since you can only see your own 13 cards before bidding, the honest answer is an estimate — and this calculator turns three concrete features of a hand (spade honors, off-suit aces, and voids) into a single suggested bid.

The Heuristic

Bid = Spade Honors (A/K/Q) + Off-suit Aces + Voids
(capped between 0 and 13)

This is a trick-estimation heuristic, not an exact probability model — Spades bidding depends heavily on partner coordination and how the other 39 cards are distributed, which no single-hand formula can capture exactly. Each spade honor is assumed likely to win a trick once trump is established; each off-suit ace wins its own trick; each void lets trump be used to ruff in on that suit.

Where This Gets Used

  • Making a defensible opening bid — converting hand features into a number quickly, especially useful for newer players still building bidding intuition.
  • Sanity-checking a gut-feel bid — comparing an instinctive bid against the heuristic score before committing.
  • Understanding why voids matter — a void looks like nothing on paper but is one of the most valuable features in a trick-taking hand once trump is in play.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter Spade Honors — the count of A/K/Q of spades in your hand (0–3).
  2. Enter Off-suit Aces (0–3).
  3. Enter Voids — suits you hold zero cards in (0–2).
  4. Select Calculate to see the suggested bid.
