Cribbage scoring combines five distinct categories in a single hand: every combination of cards summing to 15, every matching pair, every run of 3 or more consecutive ranks, a flush across matching suits, and a bonus point for the right jack.
Worked example
For hand cards 5H, 5C, 5S, JD with starter card 5D:
Result = 29 points
This is the legendary "perfect 29" hand - the maximum possible score in all of cribbage, and one of the rarest hands a player will ever see across a lifetime of play. It requires exactly this configuration: three of a kind plus the fourth matching card as the starter, combined with a jack whose suit matches the starter.
