Two Kinds of Points, One Bidding Decision
The Milton Work point count — still the backbone of standard bridge bidding — combines two separate measurements of a hand's strength. High card points reward the honors you hold; length points reward long suits that can run once trumps are cleared. A hand with 11 high card points and a seven-card suit can easily outbid a flat 13-point hand, and this calculator adds both components the way standard bidding systems actually do.
The Formula
Length Points = Σ max(0, suit length − 4), for each of the four suits
Total Points = HCP + Length Points
Length points only start counting once a suit runs past four cards — a five-card suit adds 1 point, a six-card suit adds 2, and so on, since length only becomes an asset once trumps can be established.
What the Total Suggests

A full deck holds exactly 40 HCP (4 aces + 4 kings + 4 queens + 4 jacks, worth 4+3+2+1 each), so an average hand holds 10 HCP.
Where This Gets Used
- Deciding whether to open the bidding — the 12-point opening threshold is the single most-used rule in standard bridge bidding.
- Judging slam potential — partnerships track combined point counts (typically 33+ for a small slam) across the bidding sequence.
- Teaching new players — point counting is usually the first concrete skill taught before conventions like Stayman or Blackwood.
