Flame Temperature Calculator: Real-World Flame Temperature With Excess Air
Real combustion systems almost always run with more air than the bare stoichiometric requirement, and that extra air absorbs heat without contributing any combustion energy, pulling the actual flame temperature well below the theoretical adiabatic value. This calculator applies that dilution effect to give a more realistic operating temperature.
The Formula
Tactual = Tambient + (Tad − Tambient) / (1 + Excess Air% / 100)
Worked Example
The adiabatic flame temperature is 2,200°C, ambient temperature is 25°C, and the burner runs with 20% excess air.
Tactual = 25 + (2,200 − 25) / 1.20 = 1,837.5°C
