Specific volume expresses how much volume a unit mass of gas occupies, rather than how much mass fits in a unit volume (density) - the same physical property viewed from the opposite direction, useful in different engineering contexts.
Worked example
For flue gas with a density of 0.7 kg/m³:
Specific Volume = 1 / 0.7 = 1.42857 m3/kg
Fan and blower sizing calculations often work directly in specific volume terms - since a fan must move a required mass flow rate of flue gas, specific volume converts that mass flow requirement directly into the volumetric flow the fan needs to be sized to handle at actual operating conditions.
