Formula

1. Plants Per Row = floor(Bed Length in inches / Spacing)
2. Number of Rows = floor(Bed Width in inches / Spacing)
3. Total Capacity = Plants Per Row x Number of Rows

Example

An 8ft x 4ft raised bed with 12" plant spacing:

96in x 48in → 8 plants per row x 4 rows = 32 plants

Spacing Requirements Vary Enormously by Crop

The same raised bed can hold very different plant counts depending entirely on what you grow in it - radishes and lettuce need only a few inches of spacing, while larger crops like tomatoes, peppers, or squash typically require 18-24+ inches between plants for adequate growth, air circulation, and access for harvesting.
