Lawn Seed Calculator

Lawn Seed Calculator

Grass seed application rates are conventionally given per 1,000 square feet - this calculator scales that rate to your exact lawn area.

Seed Needed = (Lawn Area / 1000) x Seed Rate Per 1000 sq ft

Example

2,500 sq ft lawn at a rate of 5 lbs per 1,000 sq ft:

Seed Needed = (2,500 / 1,000) x 5 = 12.5 lbs

New Lawn vs. Overseeding

Seed rates vary significantly depending on whether you're establishing a brand-new lawn from bare soil or overseeding an existing one - new lawn establishment typically requires roughly 2-3x the seed rate of overseeding, since overseeding only needs to fill in thin or bare patches within an already-established turf rather than covering the entire area from scratch.

Grass Species Matters

Seed application rates differ substantially by grass species - fine fescues typically use lower rates than Kentucky bluegrass or perennial ryegrass, so always check the specific product label's recommended rate for the seed blend you're actually using rather than relying on a single universal figure.
