Vermicompost Worm Bin Calculator
Vermicompost Worm Bin Calculator
Setting up a worm composting bin? Red wiggler composting worms (Eisenia fetida) can process roughly half their own body weight in food scraps per day under good conditions - this calculator sizes your worm population and bin accordingly.
Formula
Worms Needed = Daily Food Scraps / 0.5 (worms process ~half their body weight in food daily)
Bin Surface Area ≈ Worms Needed (roughly 1 sq ft of surface per pound of worms)
Example
1 lb of daily food scraps:
Worms Needed = 1 / 0.5 = 2.0 lbs of worms, requiring roughly 2.0 sq ft of bin surface area
Why Surface Area Matters More Than Depth
Worm bins are sized by surface area rather than depth, since worms are surface feeders that need adequate air exchange across the top layer of bedding - a shallow, wide bin generally works better than a deep, narrow one, which can develop poorly ventilated anaerobic conditions at the bottom that stress or kill the worm population.
