Estimating a Tree's Age Without Cutting It Down
Counting rings is the only exact way to age a tree, but that requires an increment borer core or a cross-section from a felled trunk. For a living, standing tree, foresters and arborists instead use a rule-of-thumb relationship between trunk diameter and typical annual growth rate for the species — not exact, but a defensible estimate from a single tape-measure reading.
The Formula
Age = Trunk Diameter (in, measured at 4.5 ft height) × Growth Factor (years/in)
The growth factor is a species-specific constant representing how many years it typically takes that species to add one inch of trunk diameter at breast height. Measurement is taken at the standard forestry reference height of 4.5 feet above ground.

These are estimation constants, not measured data — actual growth rate varies with soil, competition, climate, and site conditions, sometimes substantially.
Worked Example
A sugar maple with a measured trunk circumference of 47 inches: diameter = 47 ÷ π ≈ 14.96 in. Age = 14.96 × 5.5 ≈ 82.3 years.
