Getting Mulch Depth Right, Not Just the Volume
Mulch does real work — suppressing weeds, holding soil moisture, and moderating root temperature — but only within a fairly narrow depth window. Too thin and weeds punch through within weeks; piled too deep against a trunk or stem, mulch traps moisture against bark and invites rot and pests. This calculator converts an area and target depth into the volume of mulch to order, and flags depths outside the generally recommended range.
The Formula
Mulch Volume (cu ft) = Area × Depth (in) ÷ 12
Mulch Volume (cu yd) = Volume (cu ft) ÷ 27
Mulch Volume (cu yd) = Volume (cu ft) ÷ 27

Note: The generally recommended mulch depth for garden beds is 2–4 inches. Shallower layers won't reliably block weed germination; deeper layers can suffocate roots, encourage shallow rooting, or hold enough moisture against stems to promote rot — this calculator flags depths outside that range.
Where This Matters
- Ordering bulk mulch — suppliers sell by the cubic yard, so converting a bed's square footage and target depth into yardage avoids a shortfall mid-spread.
- Comparing bagged vs. bulk — bagged mulch is typically sold in 2 cu ft units; the cubic-foot figure here converts directly into a bag count.
- Refreshing existing mulch — a thinner top-up layer (around 1 inch) over settled mulch uses proportionally less volume than a fresh full-depth application.
