Growing Season Length = First Fall Frost Day - Last Spring Frost Day
Example
Last spring frost on day 110, first fall frost on day 290:
Growing Season = 290 - 110 = 180 frost-free days (long growing season)
Why This Number Matters
A vegetable variety listed as needing "90 days to maturity" needs at least 90 frost-free days after planting to reliably produce a harvest before the first fall frost damages the plants - comparing your growing season length against a crop's stated maturity time is one of the most basic (and important) planning steps before choosing what to grow.
An Important Caveat
Frost dates published by local agricultural extension offices are historical statistical averages, not guarantees - actual frost timing varies meaningfully year to year, which is why experienced gardeners commonly build in a buffer beyond a crop's stated days-to-maturity rather than planning right up to the theoretical edge of the season.
