The Flared Waste
Early oil wells often produced gas along with the oil, and with no way to store or transport it usefully, drillers simply burned it off at the wellhead — “flaring” it into the sky. This wasteful practice, still seen in some fields today, reflected a hard truth: a gas is far harder to contain and move than a liquid, and without infrastructure it had little value.
The Pipeline Network
Natural gas became valuable only when it could be delivered. The construction of vast networks of pipelines — carrying gas under pressure over great distances from field to city — turned the wasted flame into a deliverable fuel. Chilling It to Liquid
Pipelines cannot cross oceans, so to trade gas globally, engineers learned to cool it until it condenses into a liquid — liquefied natural gas, or LNG — shrinking its volume enormously so it can be shipped by tanker. At its destination it is warmed back into gas. This feat of refrigeration opened a worldwide market for a fuel once trapped near where it was found.
The Clean-Burning Fossil Fuel
Natural gas — largely methane — burns more cleanly than coal or oil, producing less pollution and carbon dioxide per unit of energy, which made it central to modern power and heating.
